According to Chris Johnson, Grant
Funding Expert grants are given to serve a higher purpose; to give a
chance for improvement whether it be an after school program, or even a playground site. That’s putting it very simply, but that’s
pretty much the whole of it. Grants are for individuals intend on improve the lives of others. Along with the plethora of grants that are
available, however, is the garden variety requirements, language and deadlines
that are grant-specific.
A few things to keep in mind when applying for a grant, no matter if you are with a city, daycare, school or even HOA:
Take the time to research for the appropriate grant for your particular project
With each grant available, there is specific criteria for applying for that
grant. You might not be in the right area for one grant or not cater to a
particular demographic. Many grants like to give within their community ā for
example, some corporations like to grant within 20 miles of their home office,
the local store, or within a certain city. They may be for certain time periods
or for certain populations. Of course there is also the competition of the
other organizations that may be applying as well. You’ll want to find a few
that cover your specific criteria.
A side note: there are revitalization grants/programs available, but these
can be time-intensive as well. Contact your state’s Natural Resources Department, the Environmental Protection Agency or HUD for more information of
these types of grants and programs.
Take the time to find the appropriate person to write your
grant(s)
Grants are language specific, particularly government grants. If you don’t
have experience writing grants, find someone who does.
A professional grant writer knows the language and detail that is crucial to
getting a grant approved. A pro is also well versed in the language that often
requires a passionate plea and wording that speaks to the necessity and
oftentimes, the urgency of receiving funds. You want someone who will
convey your needs.
Time to wait
Funds do not always come through as planned, and rarely come through
immediately after completing your paperwork. But if you’ve chosen the right
grant and written it well, chances are your money will come through as needed.
It’s best not to rely on only one source if you are unfamiliar with the
Grantor. Research several organizations, within your state, commercial and
federal areas. One thing to keep in mind, do not promise or hire anyone to do
the work until the funds are firmly in your hands. You can get estimates if
they are free or if you have the funds to pay for them, but you can’t promise
funds that are not yours. You’ll run the risk of owing a debt that you can’t
repay.
Grants can help an organization or a community in a grand way. Playground
areas and equipment not only help beautify and revitalize the area, it also
gives kids the wonderful opportunity of getting fresh air and exercise, which
is critical to their growth and development.
